To learn more about these procedures check our informational videos >

Consultation

The consultation appointment will include a comprehensive periodontal examination, full set of intraoral x-Rays (or limited as needed) and clinical photographs.  The diagnosis and treatment plan options will be discussed with you.  You may also elect to have a free smile design custom-made for you.

Bone Graft

The bone grafting surgery may be performed independently (guided bone regeneration for ridge augmentation) or at the time of tooth extraction (ridge preservation), at the time of gum surgery (guided tissue regeneration) or at the time of implant placement. The bone graft will be of human or bovine origin and will be used in combination with a porcine or bovine collagen membrane to stimulate regeneration. A biologic material (growth factors) may be used in conjunction with the bone graft. You will be prescribed an antibiotic to take for 1 week after surgery to prevent infection. You will have stitches that need to be removed 2 weeks after surgery. You will be provided with post-surgical instructions and prescription medication to manage recovery. Normal function on the side of surgery should be fully regained within 4-6 weeks. If the bone graft is done for ridge augmentation or preservation for an implant, the implant can be placed 4-6 months later.

Gum Graft

The gum graft will be performed under local anesthesia. There will be two surgical sites, the donor and the recipient. A biologic material (growth factors) may be used in conjunction with the gum graft. You will have stitches that need to be removed 2 weeks after surgery. You will be provided with post-surgical instructions and prescription medication to manage recovery. Normal function on the side of surgery should be fully regained within 4-6 weeks.

Implant Placement

The surgery to place the implant(s) will be performed under local anesthesia. The surgery may involve the use of biologic materials to stimulate bone regeneration. In that case you will be prescribed an antibiotic to take for 1 week after surgery to prevent infection. You will have stitches that need to be removed 2 weeks after surgery. You will be provided with post-surgical instructions and prescription medication to manage recovery. Normal function on the side of surgery should be regained within 4-6 weeks. The final crown can be delivered by your dentist 4-5 months later.

Sinus Lift Surgery

The sinus lift surgery is needed to increase the bone volume necessary for the implants, when the maxillary sinus floor is too close to where the implants are placed. The lift can be performed directly through the space created for the implant or on the cheek side of the sinus and it involves bone grafting. The sinus lift procedure may be performed at the same time of implant placement or before. If performed prior to implant placement a minimum of 6 months of healing are necessary before placing the implants. The bone graft used for sinus lift will be of bovine and human origin and will be covered with a porcine or bovine collagen membrane to stimulate regeneration.

Gingivectomy

The surgery will involve removal of excess gum to improve the esthetic appearance of the teeth and/or reduce pockets around your teeth. You may have stitches that resorb or need to be removed 2 weeks after surgery. You will be provided with post-surgical instructions and prescription medication to manage recovery. Normal function on the side of surgery should be fully regained within 4-6 weeks.

Gum Disease Surgery

The gum surgery will be performed under local anesthesia. The surgery may involve the use of biologic materials to stimulate regeneration of lost tissues. In that case you will be prescribed an antibiotic to take for 1 week after surgery to prevent infection. You will have stitches that resorb or need to be removed 2 weeks after surgery. You will be provided with post-surgical instructions and prescription medication to manage recovery. Normal function on the side of surgery should be fully regained within 4-6 weeks.

Tooth Extraction

The simple or surgical tooth extraction(s) will be performed under local anesthesia. The extraction may involve the use of biologic materials to stimulate bone regeneration. In that case you will be prescribed an antibiotic to take for 1 week after surgery to prevent infection. You will be provided with post-surgical instructions and prescription medication to manage recovery. Normal function on the side of the extraction(s) should be regained within 2 weeks.

Crown Lengthening

The crown lengthening procedure involves surgery on your gums and underlying bone to remove excess tissues and increase the size of the tooth visible in the mouth. This surgery is performed under local anesthesia. This procedure is performed in preparation for a restoration (filling/crown) done by your dentist (functional crown lengthening) or for esthetic purposes to increase the size of your teeth (esthetic crown lengthening). The crown lengthening procedure will be followed by crowns or veneers delivered by your dentist. In some cases, the esthetic crown lengthening will be the only procedure you need to change your smile. In both cases we will work with your dentist who makes the crowns/veneers. You will have stitches that resorb or need to be removed 2 weeks after surgery. You will be provided with post-surgical instructions and prescription medication to manage recovery. Normal function on the side of surgery should be fully regained within 4-6 weeks.

Biopsy

The soft tissue biopsy will either be excisional (removing the lesion, when small) or incisional (harvesting a piece of the lesion, when large). The tissue will be sent to a pathology lab for a diagnosis, which will be provided within 2 weeks. You will have stitches that resorb within 1-2 weeks and will be provided with post-surgical instructions and prescription medication to manage recovery. Normal function on the side of surgery should be fully regained within 2 weeks.

Exposure of Impacted Teeth

The surgery will be performed under local anesthesia to expose the impacted tooth. A gold chain button may be attached to the tooth during surgery for the orthodontist to begin moving the tooth within 1-2 weeks after surgery. You will have stitches that resorb or need to be removed 2 weeks after surgery. You will be provided with post-surgical instructions and prescription medication to manage recovery. Normal function on the side of surgery should be fully regained within 4-6 weeks.

Frenectomy

The procedure will remove tension generated by a frenum on your gum and lip/tongue to prevent further damage to your gums and improve lip/tongue position. You may have stitches that resorb or need to be removed 2 weeks after surgery. You will be provided with post-surgical instructions and prescription medication to manage recovery. Normal function on the side of surgery should be fully regained within 4-6 weeks.
